In more ways than one, this is not where NY Islanders fans expected the team to be at this point of the season.

Without two members of their top forward line in Mat Barzal and Anthony Duclair, and all three of their opening night left-handed defensemen in Mike Reilly, Adam Pelech, and Alexander Romanov, the Islanders are still finding ways to accumulate points.

Not only are they stashing away points while they await reinforcements, but they also have the longest points streak in the NHL.

Isles riding 5-game point streak

Some of it may not have been pretty, but the Islanders are 3-0-2 in their last five games, topped off with their best performance of the season last night on the road against the Vancouver Canucks.

In that time, the Isles have wins against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, and Canucks, while losing in OT to the Edmonton Oilers and NJ Devils.

Bo Horvat, Anders Lee, and Kyle Palmieri have led the way with seven, seven, and six points respectively - and Isaiah Geogre has been better than advertised since making his NHL debut at the start of this streak.

While they’ve blown a multi-goal lead against the Devils over the weekend, the Isles mounted multi-goal comebacks of their own against the Penguins and Oilers.

With three games remaining on their West Coast trip, the Isles still have some work to do in order to consider this a positive trip. They’ll return home to UBS arena on November 23rd against the St. Louis Blues, where it’ll be close to four weeks since Duclair was injured.

While it was looking grim from a roster point of view, the Islanders may come out on the other side of this remaining in the thick of the standings.
