The NY Islanders looked tired in a shutout loss against the Edmonton Oilers

After a relentless win on Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild, the intensity didn’t match for the NY Islanders in today’s Halloween matinee against the Edmonton Oilers.

The Islanders started on the wrong foot almost immediately. Emil Heineman took a 5-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing after a collision with Iassac Howard. The call wasn’t immediately made, but after Howard struggled to get to his feet, the referee’s decided on making the major call, which was upheld after video review.

Isles get blanked by the Oilers

The Islanders managed to kill off all five minutes against one of the league's fiercest power plays run by Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard.

Managing to survive the first period scoreless, the high-flying Oilers put up three goals in the second period, entering the final stanza chasing. An empty-net goal sealed the deal for the Oilers, as the Islanders fell 4-0, with Tristan Jarry earning his second straight shutout.

“We looked a little fatigued as a group.” Pete DeBoer said postgame. “When you're fatigued, mentally you make some mistakes you don't normally make, and physically you make some mistakes you don't normally make."

This was the Islanders' first game back at home following a three-game road trip in Dallas, Nashville, and Minnesota. The Islanders won’t play again until Thursday, when they take on the league-leading and reigning Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. They’ll wrap up the home stand a week from today against the NJ Devils before heading West for the annual California road trip.
