At the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, the NY Islanders were a team stuck in no man's land. A team good enough not to finish at the bottom of the standings, but not good enough to make a real push towards the Stanley Cup, on top of a barren prospect pool.

But the 2025 NHL Lottery changed the Islanders' fortunes. A 3.5% chance at the first overall pick, and the balls bounced their way. On top of selecting Matthew Schaefer first overall, the Noah Dobson trade brought in Kashawn Aitcheson and Victor Eklund, two players the Isles had in their top 10.

With the prospect pool heading in the right direction and the team showing signs of life last season before a late collapse, the Islanders are a few pieces away from being a real contender. But one thing Mathieu Darche can't do is rush it.

With Aitcheson, Eklund, and Cole Eiserman among the team's top prospects, there's a significant fall-off after that. Additionally, the Islanders own the 13th overall pick in June's NHL Draft and don't pick again until No. 109. While adding young, established pieces to the team would be ideal, the organization can't be over agressive in trading too many assets.

It's taken years to get the prospect pool to this point, and having a budding superstar like Schaefer on the roster, there's no need to fall into win-now mode. Darche knows what he has in his prospects and expects them to remain with the Islanders unless the perfect deal falls into his hands. There's no need to push the envelope now. We've waited this long - let's get this thing right.
