The vibes are good around the New York Islanders after an impressive 4-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night. The win was the team's second straight, including a 5-4 OT win over the Boston Bruins last Sunday. They'll have a chance to win their third straight for the first time on Saturday night in their first-ever trip to Salt Lake City for an NHL game.

That's the good news, but for the vibes to stick, the Islanders will have to improve their special teams, and while the penalty kill has shown signs of improvement, the power play has now hit a drought of record proportion. After failing to convert their one opportunity with the man advantage versus Vegas, the Isles are now 0-for-21 over their last 12 games, tying a franchise record.

It's the first time the Islanders have gone scoreless in 12 straight games since a stretch from Nov. 10 to Dec. 9th in 2010. That team finished 17th in power-play % at 17.2. Prior to that the inaugural 1972-73 team went from Nov. 26 to Dec. 20 without scoring with the man advantage.

The current team is dead-last in power-play percentage and has been for some quite time. They are currently at a 10.9% success rate with only 11 PPGs throughout the year. During the 12 game drought, the Islanders have been outscored 9-0 on the power play by the opposition.

Last night's game was a positive step in the right direction. The Islanders played a strong sixty minutes, didn't give up much, and got stronger as they built a lead and then added to it. However, the Islanders and their management are kidding themselves if they'll end up in the playoff position without some goal production from their special teams.
