After being banished from international play since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia will be returning to IIHF competitions starting immediately.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the IIHF's ruling, stating a lack of evidence regarding security concerns made by the IIHF.

The first competition we'll see Russia return to will be the World Junior Championship held during the holiday season, played this year in Edmonton and Red Deer.

The ruling being overturned means that we could see one of the NY Islanders' top prospects, Daniil Prokhorov, playing in the tournament. Selected in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, Prokhorov made his transition to North America after spending last season in the MHL, VHL, and KHL in Russia.

In 10 games this season with the Hamilton Hammers of the AHL, Prokhorov has struggled to adapt to the North American game, registering one goal and zero assists. But his presence at 6'6" is daunting for those playing at the junior level. His aggressive style of play and net-front presence could be overwhelming for the young competition, allowing the skilled Russians to do their jobs around the perimeter while he does the dirty work.

This ruling won't only affect the WJC, but Russia will be returning to the World Championship at the end of the season, and the Olympics in 2030. Ilya Sorokin, one of the league's top netminders, could be playing for Russia for teh first time since he joined the Islanders. And with this ruling, we'll see if the NHL follows suit and allows the Russians to participate in the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
