The NY Islanders sign a former Toronto Marlies defenseman to the AHL roster

The NY Islanders likely won't make any more signings on their NHL roster, but Mathieu Darche and newly appointed GM of the Hamilton Hammers, Evan Gold, continue to add as Hamilton prepares for its first season back in the AHL.

The team announced today the signing of Chas Sharpe to a one-year deal. Sharpe, 22, is a 6'3" right-shot defenseman who spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs organiztaion. Captain of the Mississauga Steelheads during his final season in the OHL, Sharpe registered 53 points, leading the team in points and goals (19) among defensemen.

Another RHD for the Hamilton Hammers

Going undrafted, Sharpe signed with Toronto at the conclusion of his OHL career, bouncing between the Toronto Marlies and the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. In 2024-25, Sharpe played just four games with the Marlies, but excelled during his time in Cincinnati, finishing the season with 46 points in 53 games. His 25 goals were 13 more than the rest of the team's defensemen combined.

"The strength of Sharpe's game is definitely his shot. He has a cannon for a slapshot that he has scored most of his goals with," Pension Plan Puppets says of Sharpe. "It's not just that it's heavy and has some velocity to it; it's that he can get it off quickly, it is pretty darn accurate considering the shot type, and he's got a knack for choosing when to shoot when it's more likely to get through from the point instead of just getting easily blocked by someone's shin pads."

Hamilton now has significant depth at RHD, and Sharpe could see his name on the roster sheet come opening night alongside newly signed Matthew Kessel and Ethan Bear.
