Mathieu Darche and the NY Islanders continued the never-ending search for a scoring this summer, as they were involved in talks with the Columbus Blue Jackets for Kirill Marchenko. Marchenko was ultimately dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs, with Matthew Knies being the key piece sent back to Columbus.

“Every time there’s a good player available, we make calls,” Darche told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. “He’s a good player. I thought he was really good last night. Good for the Leafs.”

Darche has stressed that he will always look to make this team better, but any trade will have to be a trade that works for the Islanders and not just for the sake of making a trade.

“It’s my job to always try and improve the team,” Darche said. “We haven’t made the playoffs the last two years. I want to improve the team. Is it easier said than done? Of course. Trust me, I spent the summer trying.”

Despite not getting a deal done for Marchenko, Darche will continue to do what he can to improve his roster. It may not be something that comes soon, but when a player becomes available and Darche sees it as a good fit, he’ll do his due diligence.

“Tomorrow morning if I hear there’s another opportunity to get more offense on our team, I would look at it,” Darche said. “You turn every stone. It might look like we didn’t do much this summer, but it’s not because we didn’t try. And I don’t want to do anything reckless.”
