The NY Islanders made their big trade deadline move sending Brock Nelson to the Colorado Avalanche last night, and it appears that might be the only trade business Lou Lamoriello partakes in before the 3 pm deadline.
"Hearing that the Islanders have told pending UFA Kyle Palmieri they're not trading him today and focused on working on a contract extension with him over the coming day," said Pierre LeBrun of TSN on X.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period shared the same sentiment on X, stating: "Hearing traction being made on a contract extension between the Isles and Kyle Palmieri. Speaking with teams who have inquired, the sense they're getting is he's staying put."
Kyle Palmieri won't be traded
Palmieri, a 34-year-old winger, has 41 points (20 G, 21 A) through 61 games this season. A pending UFA, it was assumed Lou Lamoriello would move on from the Long Island native, especially the way the deadline has become a sellers market.
It's safe to assume a player of Palmieri's caliber would have fetched multiple high draft picks, especially after Anthony Beauvillier of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who has 20 points (13 G, 7 A) in 63 games, garnered a second-round pick from the Washington Capitals.
Palmieri staying on Long Island embodies the sentiment that Lamoriello still believes in the core of this team, and will likely add in the off-season rather than head down the path of a rebuild.
If the Islanders can sign Palmieri to a team friendly contract, perhaps two years with an AAV between $4-$5M, he's a player that could help the team make another push over the next few seasons and still maintain some trade value in that time.
It may take some time to hammer out details on a deal, so an announcement may not be made before the 3 pm deadline.
