Named in Nick Kypreos of Sportnet's 'Intriguing Names to Watch' at the deadline, the insider believes a team like the Leafs could be suitors for Mayfield. Mayfield is in the second year of a 7-year deal with a $3.5M AAV, with Kypreos asking the question if the Islanders would need to retain some salary if a team were to make a move for the blueliner.
"Possibly, but considering the incoming cap spike, $3.5 million won't be so challenging to manage as Mayfield ages into his mid-30s," Kypreos says. "There is the consideration that he has a no-trade clause, so it would require him to sign off on a move, but if Lou Lamoriello wants to move Mayfield, there will be a market. The Maple Leafs would love to get this player."
The potential incoming cap increase Kypreos speaks of is from the report by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that the NHL and NHLPA will be discussing a cap increase of $7M-$9M for the 2025-26 season - much higher than the expected $4.5M. It would be tough to eat salary for the next five seasons, but the Isles could take less to off-load Mayfield's contract in its entirety.
The no-trade clause is one thing that could shoot down any talks of a trade immediately, as Mayfield has been very fond of living on Long Island. He has a full no-trade clause through the 2026-27 season, which becomes a 16-team no-trade list beginning in 2027-28.
It should be pointed out that the Leafs do not have a strong prospect pool, ranked 28th in the league by Scott Wheeler of The Athletic. They also do not own their first round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft or second round pick in 2026. In order to get a deal done, both sides will have to become creative, but it is possible.
While it would be a tough pill to swallow to see more Islanders head to Toronto, it would be easier this time knowing something is coming back in return.
