HOW IT HAPPENED
Jamie Olesksiak's shot deflected off Brock Nelson and behind Ilya Sorokin with 3:13 left in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Seattle Kraken to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon. The goal was challenged by the Isles for goaltending interference, but stood. Yanni Gourde opened the scoring, and Jared McCann tied the game in the third period. Joey Daccord made 22 saves in the win for Seattle, their fourth straight. Pierre Engvall for the second straight game for the Islanders, and Nelson added a short-handed goal. Sorokin finished with 24 saves for the Isles, who saw their five-game point streak (3-0-2) snap.
WHAT WENT RIGHT
The Islanders played another strong road game despite not getting rewarded the same way they did in Vancouver on Thursday night. Pierre Engvall scored a goal for the second consecutive game, and Brock Nelson scored his second short-handed goal of the season and had a chance for another that would've tied the game late in the third period.
“I loved my team tonight,” Roy said. “We played a strong game. Played a solid road game. I thought we had our chances. I thought we possessed the puck. I thought we defended well, except maybe for the second goal, where we had a bit of a miscommunication.”
WHAT WENT WRONG
This will go down as another blown third-period lead for the Islanders and particularly painful because they didn't earn a point, but the circumstances were controversial this time as Roy unsuccessfully challenged goaltender interference on the game-winning goal. Brandon Tanev entered the crease on his own and contacted Sorokin, but replay in Toronto concluded that the contact "did not impair Ilya Sorokin’s ability to play his position."
Roy clearly did not agree, saying as much that the Islanders were "robbed" during the post-game. The goaltending inteference continues to be ambigious to everyone from coaches and players to broadcasters and fans. “I guess tonight I don’t ,” Roy said in the post-game. “Because there’s enough and not enough. Somebody’s gonna have to explain to me what’s enough or not enough. You’re in the crease or you’re not in the crease by yourself. You bump into the goalie or you don’t bump into the goalie.
STATS OF THE GAME
Per Eric Hornick in The Skinny, Saturday's game vs. Seattle was the first time since Jan. 9th (and thus the first time under Roy) that the Isles killed at least four power plays without allowing a goal. The Isles have allowed a tying goal in six games this season, going 2-2-2 in those games. It was the third time this season that the Isles took a lead during the third period but lost the game (0-1-2).
