HOW IT HAPPENED

Anders Lee scored twice in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, but Leon Draisaitl's goal 1:52 into overtime lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. The Oilers were led by Connor McDavid, who scored his fifth goal of the season and assisted on three goals, including the game-winner, to leave him one point shy of 1,000 in his career. Kyle Palmieri scored his team-leading seventh goal, and Ilya Sorokin stopped 38 of 42 shots in the loss. Stuart Skinner finished with 19 saves for the Oilers and Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists.

WHAT WENT RIGHT

In a role reversal, it was the Islanders rallying back from down two goals in the third period when Lee, who continues his strong start, scored twice in the third, including a goal with 2:40 left after Sorokin was pulled for an extra skater. “That's a big point when you're down 3-1 with a few minutes left, and on the road here against a very good hockey team,” Lee said. “Unfortunate we didn't get the second one, but for us to keep it within reach and find a way to get it to OT, it's a good point.

WHAT WENT WRONG

The Islanders were dominated most of the night and were hemmed in their own zone as Edmonton finished with a 44-22 shot advantage and a staggering 15-2 edge on high-danger shots while the teams were playing five-on-five. It's for that reason, even moreso than being down two goals in third period as to why the team felt more than foturnate to come away with a point. “Getting down a couple goals midway through the third to be able to come back and find a way to get a point, I think, is really big for this team,” defenseman Ryan Pulock said.

The Islanders fell to 1-4 in O.T., but ended up taking away a point to start their road trip. “There are nights you're going home and you're pissed off,” head coach Patrick Roy said. “There are nights you’re going home and you say, ‘okay we stole the point.’ And tonight that was the case.”

STATS OF THE GAME

Per Eric Hornick in The Skinny, Edmonton won 32 of the 60 face-offs, ending the Isles' franchise-record streak of winning the majority of draws for 14 straight games. It was only the 15th time in the real-time era that a team has had a streak of at least that length.

SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE GAME

Super-fan, "Islanders Live" traveled to Edmonton for the game and was able to (with Mat Barzal's Mom's permission) to spend some time in the Barzal family suite. As you can see by the video there were a lot of No. 13 sweaters in the crowd even as No. 13 remains off the ice with an injury.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Islanders’ Western Canada continues on Thursday night when they visit the Vancouver Canucks. Puck drop is at 10 PM EST.
