HOW IT HAPPENED

The New York Islanders scored four times in the second period and then held off the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 at UBS on Saturday night. The Isles were led by Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who scored a goal and assisted on two more, and Maxim Tsyplakov, who scored in the second consecutive game. Oliver Wahlstrom tallied his second of the season, and Bo Horvat ended a 13-game scoring drought. Ilya Sorokin made 28 saves for the Isles, who are 2-3-2 in their last seven. Andrei Svechnikov had two power-play goals for Carolina, and Pyotr Kochetov finished with 21 saves.

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The Islanders bounced back, not only from a poor effort against Seattle, but also in this game, trailing 1-0 and then 2-1 in the second period before scoring three unanswered goals in the period. “It was a nice response after a disappointing loss against Seattle,” Patrick Roy said. “I was happy with the way we bounced back tonight, and we played a strong game. So that was a good team win.”

The team win included goals from Oliver Wahlstrom, who scored only his second of the season 43 seconds after Carolina had regained the lead. Most importantly, Bo Horvat found the back of the net for the first time in 14 games, ending one of the worst scoring droughts of his career.

“I’d like to say that I've been feeling it starting to come for, seems like 13-14 games,” Horvat said after the game. “It just was one of those things where it finally went in for me. And I mean, I’ve said it before, and I'll say again, as long as my linemates keeps scoring and we keep getting wins, I'll keep passing the puck too.”

WHAT WENT WRONG

The 32nd-ranked penalty kill has nowhere to go but up in the rankings, but it keeps finding a way to fair worse. The Islanders allowed two more power-play goals on Saturday night, as Andrei Svechnikov twice benefited from finding a loose puck near the crease and beating Sorokin. The Isles have been especially bad on the PK at home, killing off only 50% (13 of 26) this season.

STATS OF THE GAME

Per NHL PR, Maxim Tsyplakov, who turned 26 four days after Sept. 15 and remains eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, became the sixth Islanders rookie with four multi-point games at age 26 or older following Anders Kallur (13 in 1979-80), Germain Gagnon (7 in 1972-73), Hubie McDonough (4 in 1989-90), Bob Cook (4 in 1972-73) and Jim Mair (4 in 1972-73). Kallur, Gagnon, McDonough, Cook and Mair all achieved the feat before the current Calder Trophy criteria was introduced in 1990-91.

SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE GAME
