It was a tough scene watching Alexander Romanov crash into the boards in last night's NY Islanders 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.

As the Stars were chasing a tying goal, Mikko Rantanen dumped a puck into the zone, looking to retrieve it from the end boards. A few feet away from the boards, Rantanen pushed Romanov to his knees, sending him flying into the boards face-first.

No further discipline for Rantanen

After a few minutes on the ice, where both teams' trainers came onto the ice to assist, Romanov was helped off the ice while hunched over.

Patrick Roy gave it to Rantanen and the Stars’ bench, as heated as he’s looked behind the bench in his tenure with the Islanders.

Rantanen was assessed a major penalty and given a game misconduct.

The hit appeared as if it was going to draw the attention of the Department of Player Safety. However, a report today from Lia Assimakopoulos of the Dallas News reveals there will be no supplemental discipline for Rantanen, stating that contact from Scott Mayfield before the collision was a factor in the outcome.

The Islanders were visibly upset after the game, concerned more about their teammate and friend than they were about beating one of the league's top teams on the road.

“When one of your friends gets hurt on the ice, it’s way more important than hockey to me,” JG Pageau said. “Obviously, we get the two points and we’re happy about that, but I think everyone’s first concern was Romy. The rest just took care of itself.”

There is still no update on Romanov’s status, and we have yet to hear from Patrick Roy on the league's decision regarding Rantanen.

The Isles will host the Stars on March 26, in what is likely to be a highly emotional game for the Islanders.
