With the NY Islanders AHL affiliate moving North of the border to Hamilton, ON, other major changes are coming along with it. The Islanders prospect pool has improved dramatically, and roster spots are needed for prospects ready to turn pro - meaning decisions have to be made.

It appears as if Matt Maggio, the Islanders' 5th-round pick at the 2022 NHL Draft, will be one of those casualties, as Artur Khairullin in Russia is reporting that Maggio appears to be signing a contract with Admiral in the KHL.

Maggio headed to the KHL

Maggio found his game in his second season with the Windsor Spitfires after going undrafted in his first year of eligibility. Putting up 85 points (38 G, 47 A) during that campaign, Maggio raised his game to a new level during his final season in the OHL. His 111 points (54 G, 57 A) in 66 games saw him earn the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL's Most Outstanding Player.

Once turning pro, Maggio's offensive prowess hasn't translated in the way he'd have hoped, but he still put up solid numbers in Bridgeport despite struggling with consistency. Last season was his most productive, scoring 12 goals and adding 21 assists in 63 games.

"I’ll start by saying I stand by what I’ve been saying all season," said Kenny Kaminsky of Isles in the Sound. "I truly believe Maggio is one of the most skilled players on this team. His speed and hands make him extremely dangerous, and I would say the Windsor Spitfires product has been one of the most fun players to watch when he is on his game."

The addition of Victor Eklund, Cole Eiserman, and Daniil Prokhorov to Bridgeport's roster has made Maggio expendable, as the 23-year-old saw himself out of the lineup for a stretch as the team saw success.

Maggio is a tough prospect to lose, but he'll get the playing time he is looking for in Russia, with the Islanders still retaining his NHL rights.
