Tony DeAngelo's return to the New York Islanders will last a little longer than either side probably envisioned when he first signed with them for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

The Islanders announced Friday that they have signed the veteran defenseman to a two-year contract, a deal first reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman that carries an average annual value of $4.5 million. DeAngelo later joked on social media that he had hoped to announce the news himself before Friedman beat him to it.

The new contract represents a significant raise for the 30-year-old defenseman, who signed a one-year deal with the Islanders last offseason after spending part of the previous year playing in the KHL.

At the time, the signing generated some skepticism. DeAngelo's previous NHL stops had included both productive offensive seasons and off-ice controversies, leading some to question whether the Islanders were taking an unnecessary risk.

Instead, the move turned out to be one of former general manager Lou Lamoriello's better late-career additions.

DeAngelo appeared in a career-high 76 games for the Islanders last season, recording five goals and 30 assists for 35 points. He finished third on the team in assists and ranked second among Islanders defensemen in goals, points, power-play points and shots on goal.

Since joining the Islanders in January 2025, DeAngelo has totaled 54 points in 111 games, reestablishing himself as a productive offensive defensemen, even if he continues to struggle on the defensive side of things.

Just as importantly for the Islanders, DeAngelo proved to be a reliable presence both on and off the ice. Despite concerns that followed him earlier in his career, he became a trusted veteran within the organization and an important contributor on the blue line.

Selected 19th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2014 NHL Draft, DeAngelo has appeared in 482 NHL games with Arizona, the New York Rangers, Carolina, Philadelphia and the Islanders.
