Nearly two weeks into his first NHL training camp, New York Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer is embracing every moment. The Islanders’ 2025 first-overall pick has quickly gone from development camp to rookie camp and now into the main room at Northwell Health Ice Center, where he’s leaned on veterans while soaking up the experience.
“It’s been awesome,” Schaefer said. “From the combine, to the draft, to development camp and now here, everything’s been a step in the right direction. I just want to get better every day. The guys have helped me so much along the way, and I’m starting to feel more comfortable and confident playing with them.”
Part of that comfort comes from his new defense partner, Scott Mayfield, who has been quick to mentor the 18-year-old. “We talk a lot about what we can do better and always have each other’s backs,” Schaefer said. “It’s pretty fun playing with him.”
Off the ice, Schaefer has been welcomed into the Islanders’ family culture. Veterans like Anders Lee and Matt Martin have invited him over, even letting him spend time with their kids. “Some would call me a babysitter,” Schaefer laughed. “I’m throwing Bo’s kid in the pool, playing with Marty’s kids — I love it. At the end of the day, we’re hockey players, but away from the rink it’s nice to refresh.”
On the ice, the adjustment has been noticeable. The speed, size, and strength of NHL players have required him to tighten up his defensive game. Twice this preseason he’s shown off his elite skating — hustling back to break up breakaways by Matvei Michkov and Brennan Othmann. “I hate losing and I love winning,” Schaefer said. “When the game’s on the line, I’ll give it everything I’ve got.”
Still just 18, Schaefer says he’s enjoying life at the hotel with fellow prospect Calum Ritchie, who has been his roommate. “We went grocery shopping last night for snacks,” Schaefer joked. “It’s been awesome spending time with him, and with all the guys. I’m having fun and learning every day.”
