What could Simon Holmstrom and Emil Heineman’s next contracts look like ?

The contracts that are being handed out in the NHL are insane. The Washington Capitals just gave Ryan Leonard $10.5 million per season and gave Justin Sourdif $6.35 million per season. Leonard is a top six player, but Sourdif is a third liner at best. 

The New York Islanders have two restricted free agents who are looking for new contracts in Simon Holmstrom and Emil Heineman. Both of them are earning a pay raise, but the question is what their next contracts look like. 

Simon Holmstrom has been around the 40-45 point mark the last two seasons and has scored 19 and 20 goals in those two seasons. The issue with Holmstrom is that anytime he’s moved into a top six role he plays differently. The Swedish forward seems to overthink plays, but when he’s on the third line he flourishes. This season could be the year he enters a full time top six role. 

The winger is projected to receive a four year contract worth 5.8 million per season. I’d expect him to get a five year contract with an average of $7 million per season. That is something the Islanders should do if Holmstrom continues to be consistent.

Heineman played his second full season in the NHL last season and scored 22 goals and tallied 31 points. He’s a physical winger and provides depth scoring. His ice time did drop when Pete DeBoer arrived, but he's still young and could be a useful middle six winger. 

Heineman is projected to get a five year contract worth $6.475 million per season. I think this is an accurate contract that Heineman will get if he puts up at least 40 points next season
