The New York Islanders are nine games into the season, riding a four-game point streak, and beginning to find their identity under Pete DeBoer. But one question continues to hang over the organization: What's going on with Mathew Barzal?

On Wednesday, general manager Mathieu Darche provided an update on the Islanders' star forward. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of an update at all.

Barzal continues skating as he works through inflammation in his surgically repaired left knee, but there's still no timetable for his return to practice, much less game action.

“We feel the inflammation is down but we’re still working with getting his strength back and how comfortable he feels,” Darche said.

That's encouraging on the surface. But how long can the Islanders continue talking about progress without providing any indication of when Barzal might return?

Remember, this is the same knee Barzal injured blocking a shot in February 2025, requiring surgery that ended his season. He returned last year and produced 72 points in 81 games, seemingly putting the injury behind him.

Then came training camp, when inflammation prevented him from passing his medical testing.

Now, nearly a month into the season, we're still waiting.

Darche insists there haven't been any setbacks or additional procedures. That's certainly positive, but the uncertainty raises legitimate questions about what version of Barzal the Islanders will eventually get back.

For now, the Islanders are finding ways to win without him. Rookie Victor Eklund is gaining valuable experience, Simon Holmström is contributing offensively, and the power play is showing signs of life.

But let's not confuse surviving without Barzal with not needing him.

The Islanders need his speed, creativity, and offensive production if they're serious about taking another step forward.

And until there's an actual timeline, the questions aren't going anywhere.

Because eventually, no news stops sounding like good news.
