It was a disappointing 2024-25 season for the NY Islanders, finishing with 82 points, nine points out of playoff position. But if there’s one thing to look forward to after their dreadful season, it’s that they have a chance at winning the NHL Draft Lottery and the rights to the first or second overall pick.

While those chances are slight at 3.5%, there is still a chance to have the opportunity to select a franchise-altering player. But who would the Isles select? Here are three options if the Isles are to win the lottery and select first.

Matthew Schaefer, D, Erie Otters (OHL)

Matthew Schafer is an interesting prospect who has risen in the rankings to become the top prospect despite not playing a game since Dec. 27, when he broke his collarbone representing Canada at the 2025 World Junior Championship.

Despite his lack of ice time, Schaefer is by far the best defensive prospect in this class.

Playing as Canada’s top defenseman at the WJC, the Great White North struggled after his departure, failing to medal.

In his 17 games in Erie, Schaefer racked up 22 points (7 G, 15 A). He iis capable of just about everything you could ask for on the offensive end of the ice, and is no slouch in his own zone.

With elite offensive-defensemen being the building block for most successful teams in the NHL, Schaefer would be the perfect addition for an Islanders team that has been missing an elite blue liner for some time.
