The NHL has a new jersey partner; Adidas. And New York Islanders fans wonder just what they might have in store for the new sweater. It probably won’t be much.

The New York Islanders are getting a new jersey next season. We knew the day was coming for a while. The NHL announced that they’d have a new jersey supplier for the 2017-18 a few years ago.

The build up has been growing ever since. First, the furor was just over who the new supplier was going to be. Fans feared that new supplier Adidas was going to toss their famed three stripes on every nook and cranny of the famed sweaters.

Then it was the possibility of having ads on the jerseys. Again, the sacred jerseys couldn’t be besmirched by a money grab by teams and the league.

But so far the only tangible changes coming to the jerseys in 2017-18 is going to be the elimination of the third jersey league wide. For the New York Islanders that means no more Brooklyn black jerseys.

Adidas Hype Campaign

As of June 12th we’ve been given small glimpses of what this “new” Islanders jersey will look like when they’re officially revealed on June 20th.

If there’s one thing to take from this is that we won’t see some ill-advised return of the Fisherman logo. The crest looks to remain the same, and even the primary home colors aren’t changing.

On the 15th, we got this picture of what might just be Adidas trying to tell everyone: “Don’t worry. THIS is all we plan on doing in terms of branding.” If so, the Adidas branding is in the same style and location as that of Reebok.

Although we’ve all seen the World Cup of Hockey jerseys. Each had the classic Adidas three stripes down the sides. So the word is still out on that.

And then we’re all treated to a shaky and glitchy video that reveals nothing new. The crest, while a different part of it, is just as we’d expect it to be after that first press release from June 15th. Same go for the colors.

We’ll all have to wait until tomorrow to find out exactly what these new sweaters are going to look like. The hope is that they look identical to those worn last season because there wasn’t anything wrong with them.
