The Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft is just a night away. Rumors have been swirling on who will be picked from the New York Islanders to create this new team in the desert. We take our second shot at making it for them.

Now that the New York Islanders protected list for the NHL Expansion Draft is out there for the public to consume we thought we’d play armchair GM. And conduct an expansion draft of our own to fill the Golden Knights roster.

We’ve done a mock draft before by complete speculation. We had no idea what player each NHL team will protect. And now that the lists are out there are a few teams we were well off.

Like Anaheim, for example, we, along with a bunch of other sources, figured that Jakob Silfverberg would be left exposed by the Ducks. Turns out they value him more than we thought nad protected him instead of 32 goal scorer Patrick Eaves.

Our team is compliant with all expansion rules with 16 forwards, eleven defensemen and three goalies. It also has 22 of the minimum 20 players under contract for the 2017-18 season. The team carries a $61.2 million cap.

We know there are some trade deals between Vegas and a few teams, namely the New York Islanders. So we’ve tried to capture that as best we could.

Atlantic Division

Boston Bruins (Colin Miller)

D. He’s 25-years-old and only costs a million on the cap. Miller isn’t prolific in the points department with only 13 points in 61 games played this season. But his 52.7% 5on5 Corsi-For lead the Boston Bruins blue line. Miller will certainly be given a bigger role playing under Gerard Gallant in Vegas.. Boston Bruins. . Colin Miller

Buffalo Sabres

. Matt Moulson. F. He’s 33-years-old and carries a big cap hit. But the expansion draft is going to be full of pitfalls and perils when it comes to the cap. The Golden Knights are going to have to take a few just to make sure they meet the cap floor. Moulson still scored 32 points on a terrible Buffalo team last season. He taught Jack Eichel how to be a professional hockey player, and now that Jack is makin’ decision for the team he needs to move out of Moulson’s place.. Buffalo Sabres

Detroit Red Wings

. Riley Sheahan. F. The Golden Knights have to take someone from each team? Detroit is a land of slim pickings. Sheahan had a bad year, but the hope is that he can get back to that 36 point pace he set back in 2014-15.. Detroit Red Wings

Florida Panthers

. Jonathan Marchessault. F. There’s no question the Golden Knights take Marchessault right? With 30 goals and 51 points this year it’s the easiest no-brainer for GM GM. Marchesseault might not like it right now, but he’s going somewhere where he’ll be one of the top players on the team.. Florida Panthers

Montréal Canadiens

Nikita Nesterov. D. This will be his third team in two years. He’s not that top pair flashy defender, but Nesterov is still effective. He ranked thrid on the Habs with a 54.3% 5on5 Corsi-for In Vegas see him playing between the second and third defensive pairing.. Montréal Canadiens.

Ottawa Senators

Thanks to Dion Phaneuf, Marc Methot is available for the Golden Knights. We’ve seen other tempted in taking Bobby Ryan. But let’s remember that he only scored 25 points last season, and cost $7.25 million on the cap. He was fantastic in the playoffs, but judging future potential based on a single tournament isn’t a great strategy.. Ottawa Senators. . Marc Methot . D

Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning. . Cedric Paquette. F. With ten points in 56 games okayed last season, Paquette is going to be one of many depth players for the Golden Knights. His $812,000 cap hit helps keep cost low as Vegas goes about trying to secure more expensive talents.

Toronto Maple Leafs

. Martin Marincin. D. Marincin is young at 25-year-old and he’s already a solid NHL level blue liner. Something Vegas is gong to need in abundance if they’re to be even remotely competitive this season. With a $1.25 cap hit, Marincin is a great cheap option for the blue line.. Toronto Maple Leafs

Metropolitan Division

Carolina Hurricanes

At 34-years-old Stempniak is on the wrong side of 30. But his 40 points this season make him a desirable target for Vegas. And with a $2.5 million cap hit through this year minimizes much of the risk that Vegas is taking.. Carolina Hurricanes. . Lee Stempniak. F

Columbus Blue Jackets

William Karlsson. F. With 25 points last season William Karlsson was a great depth player for the Blue Jackets. And he’s only 24-years-old. He’ll be even better with what should be an increase in ice time with the Vegas Golden Knights. With a $1 million cap hit there’s no reason to pass him up.. Columbus Blue Jackets.

New Jersey Devils

. Mike Cammalleri. F. Cammalleri has been a good soldier for a terrible terrible New Jersey team. Last season wasn’t a great one, where he scored only 31 points in 61 games played and with a $5 million cap hit it’s understandable to see why the Devils didn’t protect him. He’s years removed from the 82 point player he was in 2008-09, but getting someone who can net 45-50 points and help the young crop of rookies that are about to head to Vegas is a great move.. New Jersey Devils

New York Islanders

Without rumors of a deal between the Islanders and the Golden Knights Kulemin wouldn’t have been our choice. But as we get closer to the Golden Knights deadline for selecting a team Kulemin is emerging as the player leaving the island for the desert.. New York Islanders. . Nikolai Kulemin. F

New York Rangers

G. With a 26-16-8 record while backing up Henrik Lundqvist this season Antti Raanta can’t be passed up by the Golden Knights. His .92SV% and 2.26 GAA makes him even more appealing. Oh, and he carries a $1 million salary cap hit. Raanta seems like a no-brainer for Vegas.. New York Rangers. . Antti Raanta

Philadelphia Flyers

D. It’s been a while since Del Zotto was putting up 30-40 points in a season. But he’s only 26 -years-old. He’s just entering his prime years as a defender in the NHL. He was earning $3.875 before becoming a UFA this season. Vegas will have to sign him, but a deal between $3.5 million to $4 million seems reasonable.. Philadelphia Flyers. . Michael Del Zotto

Pittsburgh Penguins

Is there any doubt that Vegas takes the three-time Stanley Cup champion in the expansion draft? Matt Murray has usurped him as the number one in Pittsburgh, but Flower is still a solid goaltender. Last season he played in 38 games putting up a 18-10-7 with a .909 SV% and 3.03 GAA. In the playoffs, he went 9-6 with an outstanding .924SV% and 2.56GAA.. Pittsburgh Penguins. . Marc-Andre Fleury. G

Washington Capitals

Washington Capitals. . Nate Schmidt. D. This season Schmidt has been a great presence for the Capitals on the blue line. Not great enough to get past Pittsburgh, but I digress. He’s young and could be had for a fairly cheap price. His expired ELC worth $852,000 on the cap will be upgraded, but something between $1.5 million to $2 million per year would be a nice fit.

Central Division

Chicago Blackhawks

D. At 25-years old Trevor van Riemsdyk will be hard to pass up. Sure, his 16 points are nothing to write home about but both his age and $825,000 cap hit are extremely appealing. Again, in most cases, you aren’t going to get an all-star but Vegas needs as many serviceable NHL players as they can get Trevor van Riemsdyk is just that.. Chicago Blackhawks. . Trevor van Riemsdyk

Dallas Stars

F. In 2014-2015 Jiri Hudler put up an impressive 31 goals for 76 points. Injuries plagued Hudler in 2016-2017 but Vegas isn’t selecting him based on 2016-2017 numbers. He’s a UFA so Vegas would have to negotiate with him but the hope is they can take a chance on him taking lesser money off a bad year. He’s a bit of a risk but the reward can be high if healthy. And you know he’ll be trade bait at the first opportunity.. Dallas Stars. . Jiri Hudler

Nashville Predators

F. It was a bit of a surprise that James Neal was left available. He’s coming off a 41 point season. Vegas would be smart to add the perennial 20 goal scorer. His lowest career total in goals is 21 while his highest is 40. If he’s anywhere in that range it’ll be a good selection for the Golden Knights.. Nashville Predators. . James Neal

Colorado Avalanche

F. Again, Vegas is taking a risk on a player who put up points in the past, just not last year. After three years averaging 48 points Soderberg’s point total dipped to just 14 last year. Granted Colorado was pretty awful, but if he can replicate anything close to the production from Boston and his first year in Colorado Vegas will be happy.. Colorado Avalanche. . Carl Soderber

St. Louis Blues

F. Yep, we think the former number one overall pick is salvageable. He is still just 23-years of age and although his 120 career points is rather disappointing Vegas takes the risk on the RFA hoping to sign him on the cheap.. St. Louis Blues. . Nail Yakupov

Winnipeg Jets

G. It’s required of Vegas to select three goalies in the expansion draft. As a third option Hutchinson doesn’t seem so bad. His numbers have steadily decreased over the last three years, but he’s still just 26 years-old and as a third option he likely won’t be seeing much playing time (Just ask J.F. Berube).. Winnipeg Jets. . Michael Hutchinson

Minnesota Wild

D. Mathew Dumba is coming off a career high of 34 points as a 22-year-old. His numbers have steadily increased over his four years in the league. Plus at a $2.55 million cap hit it seems like a solid choice for the Golden Knights blue line.. Minnesota Wild. . Matt Dumba

Pacific Division

Arizona Coyotes

. Radim Vrbata. F. Radim Vrbata is 36 years old and a UFA but he’s coming off a 55 point season. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to select a 55 point player in an expansion draft. Again, it’s a risk based on age but if he stays healthy he could be an asset in Vegas.. Arizona Coyotes

Vancouver Canucks

. Luca Sbisa. D. At 27 years old and a $3.6 million cap hit we thought why not. Are his 13 points from this past year impressive? No, but take a look for yourself at available players from Vancouver, it isn’t pretty. If anything Sbisa can be a depth defenseman which comes in handy. There are always injuries and depth is key.. Vancouver Canucks

San Jose Sharks

David Schlemko. D. David Schlemko is a journeyman d-man. He’s been on five teams in the last three years. Let’s make it an even six and say he gets picked by Vegas. They’ll be getting a 30-year old defenseman who, like Sbisa, is a good depth guy.. San Jose Sharks.

Anaheim Ducks

F. You don’t pass on a 32 goal scorer. The Golden Knights say thank you very much and make the no-brainer decision with Eaves. He put up a career high of 51 points last year but if he puts up anything over 40 Vegas will be happy. The one drawback might be his cap hit since he’s a UFA coming off a big year.. Anaheim Ducks. . Patrick Eaves

Edmonton Oilers

F. Benoit Pouliot is coming off a down year of just 14 points. But the three previous years he put up 36,34, and 36 again. You have to think he is a guy who will bounce back and finish in that 30-35 point range. It’s nothing flashy but again the expansion draft is about getting serviceable NHL players.. Edmonton Oilers. . Benoit Pouliot

Calgary Flames

Michael Stone. D. Stone put up 36 points as a defenseman once. I mean that’s pretty decent right? He’s 27 years old and a UFA so expect a pay increase but he’s a solid NHL defenseman. Again, hate to sound like a broken record here but remember “serviceable NHL players”. Calgary Flames.

Los Angeles Kings

F. Trevor Lewis has been around the block a few times. The two-time Stanley Cup champion has only played for the Kings. We expect that to change. His career high in points is just 25, but he can be a solid depth center for Vegas.. Los Angeles Kings. . Trevor Lewis
