The New York Islanders will play a game in the new Nassau Coliseum in September, but are more games at the Coliseum coming in 2018-2019?

When I found out the New York Islanders were going to play a preseason game at Nassau Coliseum I pounced on tickets. I miss the nostalgia factor going to games at the old barn, plus you can’t beat that ten-minute drive home.

Isles fans like myself might be happy to hear that Mikhail Prokhorov wants the Isles to play “a significant number” of games at the Coliseum in 2018-2019. The New York Post had the story.

Prokhorov has a $165 million investment in the new Coliseum, although he also owns the Barclays, he’d like the Isles to return to their roots for some games in two years. This likely has to do with the negotiations of a new lease.

The Barclays Center has been a poor fit from the Islanders from day one. Fans didn’t like making the trip out to Brooklyn, the ice surface was poor, plus at times it seems that they are unwelcome in the Barclays Center.

It seems like Barclays would like to lower the $55 million a year in payments to the team while the Islanders are looking for a possible exit strategy.

The question I have is what’s a significant amount of games? Is it a full season, half a season, some preseason games and a handful during the season? I don’t see this is a long term solution, only if it’s a temporary fix while a place is being built in Belmont.

We discussed it before, but Belmont is the most realistic place for the Islanders to play, so Jon Ledecky and crew’s better hop on that RFP. If the Isles play some games at the freshly painted new Coliseum it’ll be because it’s a temporary home until their home of the future is finished.
