New York Islanders goalie prospect Ilya Sorokin is off to a hot start in the KHL, five games into his season with CSKA Moscow.

One of the most talked about New York Islanders prospects over the last few years has been Ilya Sorokin. He was drafted by the Isles in the third round of the 2014 draft and has since put up monster numbers in the KHL.

His best year, previous to this hot start, was the 2015-2016 season. He had a 1.06 goals against average and a save percentage of .953. If your goalie put up those kinds of numbers in EA Sports’ NHL 18 that’d be impressive let alone in real life.

Sorokin has also made noise as someone who has flirted with the idea of coming over to the states to play. Although sadly, he recently extended his contract to remain in the KHL so a Sorokin appearance in the near future seems doubtful.

Yesterday, for the second straight game, he shut out his opponent. After five starts in net, he’s 3-1-1 with a 1.18 goals against average and a .943 save percentage. An impressive start to his early season.

We’ve grown accustomed to the impressive numbers out of Sorokin. The question will always be if he makes the trip over to North America at any point in his career. He’s still just 22-years old so the Isles have some more time to figure that out.

It just stinks watching him put up big numbers in Russia knowing he could be getting action in the AHL on the path becoming the next Isles goalie. Maybe, Linus Soderstrom, who is coming to North America, can be that guy.
