We've concluded pool play at the 2026 Winter Olympics, as all remaining games will be elimination matches for the 12 nations competing.
The Islanders at the Olympics
To the surprise of no one, Canada finished as the top overall seed headed into the knockout phase. Heading into the Olympics, Bo Horvat knew that he'd be playing a different role than he had played with the NY Islanders. Slated to play bottom-six minutes or even as the 13th forward as he was today, Horvat has made the most of his ice time despite averaging 10:16 through the first three games. Horvat has scored twice for the Canadians, slated to take on the winner of Tuesday's matchup between Czechia and Denmark.
Speaking of Czechia, Horvat was the only Islanders player selected to his national team until the acquisition of Ondrej Palat. The 34-year-old is also playing a different role than he's used to, often skating on the Czech top line with Tomas Hertl and David Pastrnak. The Czechs have had a tough go of it, entering today with one win and one loss, but fell to Switzerland today in OT, finishing third in their group. Palat has seen plenty of ice, averaging 18:53, and recording one assist. A win against Denmark on Tuesday would set up a rematch against Horvat and Canada.
Former Islander Brock Nelson has had a terrific season and has parlayed that into a fantastic Olympic Games. Nelson has two goals and an assist, all coming in the United States' first game. He's been an integral part of the PK and became the third member of his family to record an Olympic goal, joining his uncle, Dave Christian (1980), and grandfather, Bill Christian (1960), as he hopes to join them as third-generation Gold Medal winners. The Americans will take on the winner of Tuesday's matchup between Sweden and Latvia.
