Last night was not the best night between the pipes for the NY Islanders. Ilya Sorokin struggled to track the puck as the NY Rangers put five goals past the Isles netminder on 11 shots before being pulled after the second period.
With Semyon Varlamov out for what looks like the remainder of the season and turning 37 before the start of next season, the Isles will eventually have to find their predecessor to tandem with Sorokin.
Marcus Hogberg has been phenomenal for the Islanders this season, but has only played in seven games and is 30 years old.
Gidlöf is a prospect to keep an eye on
The Islanders addressed goalie depth in the 2024 NHL Draft, selecting Dmitri Gamzin and Marcus Gidlöf. Gidlöf, the second selected of the two, has made the jump to the SHL in Sweden and has been one of the league's top netminders at 19 years old.
Standing 6’6”, Gidlöf has the size that all NHL teams are looking for in future goalies and has been working his way up the rankings of the Islanders prospect pool.
“Certainly, Gidlöf has gone from being an interesting pro-league development last December to quite the SHL story,” Chapin Landvogt, Central European Scout for McKeens Hockey tells Eyes on Isles. “In fact, at this point in time, he's pretty much on track to be the SHL's ‘Rookie of the Year’”.
