New York Islanders fans can understand the jubilation the Maple Leafs faithful felt when their club won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery.

The excitement is justifiable; getting a huge reward after a disappointing season. Plus, overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to win the first-overall pick.

For the Islanders, that Draft Lottery victory turned into Matthew Schaefer. Any doubt or uncertainty about Schaefer was dispelled with his fantastic rookie season.

Despite Schaefer excelling as a teenager in a men’s league, the Islanders serve as a cautionary tale for the Maple Leafs.

A top prospect, no matter how talented, cannot single-handedly turn a team around. Yes, the hype and anticipation that come with adding such a talented player are undeniable. But the fact is that it takes much more than just one rising star to take a team back to the postseason.

In the Islanders’ case, it almost worked. The Isles were in a playoff spot heading into the final days of the season. The unfortunate late-season meltdown cost the Isles a playoff spot. The disappointment, however, did not take away from the optimism that drives the organization moving forward.

It’s just a matter of being realistic about expectations.

Islanders’ long-term outlook hinges on successful 2025 NHL Draft

The Isles transformed the outlook of the entire organization with a single draft. Beyond taking Schaefer with the first pick, the Islanders parlayed Noah Dobson into two additional first-rounders.

Those picks, Victor Eklund at #16, and Kashawn Aitcheson at #17, pretty much transformed the entire Islanders prospect pool. While some promising players were coming up the ranks, adding Eklund and Aitcheson allowed the organization to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Plus, the addition of Daniil Prokhorov in the second round paints a completely different picture for the Islanders. If all four of Schaefer, Eklund, Aitcheson, and Prokhorov become NHL mainstays, the Islanders would have hit a grand slam.

Other prospects like Cole Eiserman and Danny Nelson add further depth to what could be an exciting, young team in the coming seasons. The Islanders could become a youthful squad intermingled with key veterans like Bo Horvat, Alexander Romanov, and Ilya Sorokin.

The future looks good for the Islanders. While it was sad to see the team come up short of a playoff spot in Schaefer’s first season, the fact of the matter is that the Islanders will be a team to keep an eye on in 2026-27.
