The New York Islanders pulled off a solid 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night. But the victory was overshadowed by what could be an awful scenario for Matias Maccelli.

The Islanders forward left the game in the first period after sustaining an awkward fall that led to what the team is calling a lower-body injury.

The fall did not look good, potentially leading to a devastating situation.

According to notable medical expert, Dr. Harjas Grewal, Maccelli could be looking at a high ankle sprain or MCL injury.

As the expert noted, the potential timeline could be four to six weeks. However, he did not rule out a potential torn ACL. While it’s not quite likely, the nature of the fall may lead to a more serious situation.

It’s a tough break for the 26-year-old. He joined the Isles on a one-year show-me deal. Thus far, he has registered two goals and six points in seven games. Depending on the actual injury, Maccelli could see the momentum he’s gained derailed by a potentially tough break.

So, here’s hoping that it’s just nothing more than a truly scary incident.

Islanders lose another forward in win over Maple Leafs

Saturday night’s win turned out to be a Pyrrhic victory for the Islanders. The club also lost Calum Ritchie early in the first period. The 21-year-old played just one shift and left the game with what the club has also described as a lower-body injury.

Unlike Maccelli’s injury, it’s not totally clear how Ritchie sustained the ailment in Toronto.

Another notable sports injury expert, Darren McConaghy, weighed in on the situation, noting that there might be a concern about an MCL injury.

McConaghy’s initial assessment does not look dire for Ritchie. But the notable expert did point out that the Isles’ prospect has sustained several lower-body injuries since 2025. Those circumstances raise questions about a lingering issue that hasn’t quite healed.

It’s worth pointing out that the Islanders essentially played the entire game against Toronto with just 10 forwards. Captain Bo Horvat picked up the slack, notching a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Ilya Sorokin made 28 saves. The two Islanders’ stars earned the game’s first and third stars, respectively.

It was also great to see Simon Holmstrom having a great game. The Isles’ top liner made the game 3-1 midway through the third period, and added an empty-netter to seal the deal with about two minutes to play in the game.

The Isles will be back in action on Tuesday night as they host the Anaheim Ducks at UBS Arena.
