Teenage sensation, Matthew Schaefer has once again sent hockey twitter into an absolute frenzy. This time following his outstanding performance on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Debates have been popping up all week about his "snub" from Team Canada's Olympic roster, and this game just added fuel to the fire.

Schaefer: The Difference Maker

Schaefer recorded two goals, including the overtime winner in the Islanders 4-3 victory. The overtime goal almost blew the roof off of UBS Arena, see video below. This marked the second time this season that the 18-year old put up two goals in a single game. The first came against the Columbus Blue Jackets on November 2nd. He also extended his point streak to three games, he has recorded three goals and an assist in those contests.

The first overall pick unintentionally made headlines last week as fans across North America complained the star defenseman was "snubbed" from Team Canada's Olympic roster. The comment section on Hockey Canada's roster announcement posts on Instagram and Twitter were both flooded with questions about Schaefer's whereabouts. There is absolutely no reason why Matthew Schaefer isn't featured on the team being sent to Milan.

To make matters worse for the decision makers over at Hockey Canada, the Isles vs Leafs matchup was nationally broadcasted on Hockey Night in Canada. This meant more eyes, specifically Canadian ones, seeing this outstanding two goal performance by Schaefer just mere days after he was left off the Olympic roster.

Schaefer spoke to the media about how it was to make his Hockey Night in Canada debut. "It's awesome," he said, "I know a lot of people got to watch tonight because back home in Canada they don't get the (Isles) feed." Schaefer also seemed very happy to get the signature HNIC towel given for the post game interview with the first star. "It was pretty cool, I got my own towel." he added with a grin.

Although, many Islanders fans believe Schaefer not making the roster is a blessing in disguise. After all, he is an 18 year old in his first year of professional hockey. Two full weeks off to go home, spend time with family and rest would be huge, not only for Schaefer, but also for the Isles push to the playoffs in the ladder half of the season.

He spoke about getting the two weeks rest and how important it would be on Saturday following Isles morning skate. "The time to rest is key," Schaefer said, "whether it's for your body or your mental health and things like that. It's always nice to go back home, get some time off and rest."

"Obviously, if anyone would get the chance (to play for Team Canada) they'd take it but the rest is super key with the quick season, a lot of back to backs and playing almost everyday." Schaefer said.
