The span from July 1st to the start of training camp gives fans time to predict, speculate, and reflect. Let's make a modern-day lineup of Islanders players from 2000 to the current day.

Forwards:

Matt Moulson

John Tavares

Kyle Okposo

Anders Lee

Mathew Barzal

Jordan Eberle

Josh Bailey

Brock Nelson

Anthony Beauvillier

Matt Martin

Casey Cizikas

Cal Clutterbuck

Starting with the first line. Even though he is still public enemy #1, John Tavares has to be the top-line center. Matt Moulson was Tavares' usual left wing during his tenure. Moulson had three straight 30-goal seasons and built terrific chemistry with Tavares. Kyle Okposo was always a fan favorite and loyal Islander before finishing his career with a much-deserved Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers two years ago.

Onto line two. Current Islanders captain Anders Lee has nine seasons of over 20 goals, reaching 40 in 2017-18. Mathew Barzal's speed and creativity have him as one of the league's most dynamic players. Barzal and Jordan Eberle were consistent linemates before Eberle's departure to the Seattle Kraken. Eberle had clutch moments with the Islanders, including his double overtime goal vs. Tampa in Game 5 in 2020.

Next is line three. Josh Bailey is only one of three players to play 1,000 NHL games with the Islanders. Brock Nelson was a reliable, goal-scoring center before he was dealt to Colorado last season. Anthony Beauvillier will always have that memorable Game 6 overtime goal vs. Tampa in the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals.

Of course, the fourth line is the Identity Line. The trio was known for their physical play that jolted Islanders fans into a frenzy when they would lay the body. They typically started playoff games to set the tone and instill energy into the lineup. Their grit and dedication to do the dirty work for the team will always make them fan-favorites.

Honorable mentions: Frans Nielsen, Michael Grabner, Jason Blake, Miroslav Satan, Shawn Bates, Alexei Yashin.
