Former captain Mark Streit was a power play specialist and offensive weapon. Adrian Aucoin was known for his booming shot and ability to eat up minutes in the early 2000s.

Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk were both acquired on the same day, October 4, 2014. The two had an immediate impact on the team. Leddy was known for his effortless skating and ability to break out of the defensive zone by himself. Boychuk brought toughness, shot-blocking, and his elite slapshot to the club's special teams units.

The current Islanders of Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock round out the last pairing. Both were drafted and grown in the Islanders' system and developed into one of the league's best shut-down pairings.

Honorable mentions: Travis Hamonic, Calvin de Haan, Lubomír Višnovsky, Roman Hamrlik, Noah Dobson.
