Last night was the first game of the post-Patrick Roy era for the NY Islanders, as the team got back on track, snapping a four-game losing streak, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3.
Roy, who spent parts of three seasons as the Islanders' bench boss in his second stint as an NHL Head Coach, spent eight years without an NHL coaching job before being hired by Lou Lamoriello. If the four-time Stanley Cup winner hopes to get back behind the bench once again, he'll likely be looking for another job as soon as possible rather than taking some time off.
Roy could rremain with the NY Islanders
Roy, 60, had two years remaining on the Islanders' payroll before being relieved of his duties. According to an NHL Insider, Roy could remain with the Isles in a different capacity.
"If you know anything about Patrick Roy, he's a brilliant hockey mind," Emily Kaplan of ESPN said during last night's first intermission. "People want to pick his brain. Also, he's opinionated. That's how he gets into these positions. Now, he's being paid by the Islanders for the next two years. I heard that they even left open the possibility he might scout for them. That lets you know that even though he was fired, they still hold him in very high regard."
After his playing career and before coaching in the NHL, Roy owned the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL, purchasing the team in 1997 and selling it in 2014. Once fired by the Avalanche, he rejoined the Remparts as a Team Consultant, then as GM/Head Coach before joining the Isles. From his time in junior hockey, he has plenty of contacts throughout the CHL and could be a valuable piece in that regard if that's the road he elects to take at this time.
But it's hard to imagine someone of Roy's stature going from a head coaching position to a scout. But Roy is the type of guy who has hockey running through his veins and may not want to stay away from the game for too long, and could be willing to try something new to remain in the NHL.
