The NY Islanders pulled off a dramatic comeback victory on Saturday night, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in OT - but the win didn’t come without a cost.

Ryan Pulock and Marcus Hogberg were injured during the game and were placed on IR today.

NY Islanders injuries piling up again

Pulock went down seconds into the game, taking a spill behind the net. He skated off the ice in significant pain and didn’t return, leaving the Islanders to play essentially the entire game with five defensemen, including Tony DeAngelo playing in his first game with the Islanders.

Pulock has been logging significant time this season, averaging 21:55 and even clocking some time on the second power play unit.

His injury is being called an upper-body injury.

After spending the last three seasons in Sweden, Lou Lamoriello brought in Hogberg as an insurance policy for Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov. Varly hasn’t played since Nov. 29, and Hogberg has stepped in, in a major way.

In his seven appearances this season, Hogberg has posted a 1.45 GAA and .947 SV%.

After allowing two early goals on Saturday night, Hogberg shut the Canes down, making timely saves as the Islanders knotted up the score. He appeared to injure his hand or wrist in the third period but managed to continue playing. Before the overtime period began, the injury had worsened to the point he could no longer play and Sorokin had to step in, making one save before a Brock Nelson winner.

Jakub Skarek, who began the season as the backup in Bridgeport, has been recalled and will now back up Sorokin. He’s yet to appear in an NHL game, and Patrick Roy will likely ride with Sorokin for as long as he can until either Varlamov or Hogberg are able to return.
