NY Islanders 'sniffing around' to see which defensemen may be available for trade according to Elliotte Friedman
The NY Islanders may be looking to add a defenseman
The NY Islanders need help along their blue line and they need it fast.
Adam Pelech was placed on IR after taking a puck to the face that will leave him sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Mike Reilly suffered a scary injury after being upended by Jordan Greenway during the Isles' 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, and Alexander Romanov returned to action on Friday, but took a knock of his own against the Sabres, disappearing into the locker room at one point.
With all three Islanders left-shot defensemen's status questionable, the Isles recalled Grant Hutton and Samuel Bolduc.
The Isles need reinforcements
Tonight, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that Lou Lamoriello and the Islanders may be in the market for a defenseman.
"Now we're starting to wonder about the Islanders and their injuries," Friedman said. "It is believed the Islanders are at least looking around. They have three defensemen out. Adam Pelech, unfortunately for quite a bit of time, 4-6 weeks they said. Still, also, more day-to-day for Mike Reilly and Alexander Romanov, but, they are at least sniffing around to see what's out there."
Last season, when the Islanders went through a similar injury crisis on the blue line, Lamoriello claimed Reilly off waivers from the Florida Panthers and later traded a 7th-round pick for Robert Bortuzzo.
Reilly became a staple on the blue line along with providing another element of offense to the back end, while Bortuzzo was serviceable, adding leadership and toughness.
While everyone would love to bring in a marquee defenseman, if a move is made it's likely to be one similar to those made last season. The Islanders need to stop the bleeding and keep their head above water until healthy once again.
