Boston University and NY Islanders fans held their collective breath last weekend after Cole Eiserman took a scary spill into the end boards, needing to be helped off the ice. Leaving the arena on crutches, the fear was a worst-case scenario.

Today, we got an update from BU Head Coach, Jay Pandolfo, on Eiserman’s status going forward.

“He’s going to be back at some point,” Pandolfo said, according to Andrew Mahoney of The Boston Globe. “We just don’t know if it’s next weekend or the weekend after, but he will be back sooner rather than later.”

Eiserman escapes major injury

With what could have been a long-term injury, this is terrific news for Eiserman’s development as well as for the Terriers.

Eiserman is off to a torrid start in his sophomore campaign with BU, scoring six goals in the team's first seven games, leading his team and tied for fifth most in the nation.

After starting the season 3-0, the Terriers saw themselves ranked No. 1 in the country before dropping three of their last four games against Michigan State and UCONN. Now, without their top goal scorer, the Terriers will need to look elsewhere to make up for Eiserman’s production.

With the World Junior Championship less than two months away, there shouldn’t be any worry about Eiserman missing the competition, as he’s a shoo-in to make the team and could be playing on Team USA’s top line.

At last year’s competition, Eiserman netted three goals and added four assists while playing in a limited role on the way to a Gold Medal. While the Americans might not have as strong a lineup as the previous two years, Eiserman could be a difference maker for the Stars and Stripes.

It’s not ideal that he’ll be missing any time, but he has at least escaped a major injury.
