For the last few weeks, the St. Louis Blues have been rumored as a potential trade partner for the NY Islanders, but Brayden Schenn was not the player Mathieu Darche was expected to be in pursuit of. But just before the deadline, it appears the two sides came to an agreement on a trade, and Schenn will be joining the Islanders after waiving his no-movement clause.
In return, the Islanders are sending a first (Colorado) and third-round pick, Jonathan Drouin, and Marcus Gidlof to St. Louis.
The Islanders acquire Brayden Schenn
Schenn, 34, has been the Blues' captain for the last three seasons, helping bring the St. Louis its first Stanley Cup in 2019.

Playing in all 61 games this season for the Blues, Schenn has recorded 12 goals, adding 18 assists for a struggling Blues team. Though he has spent most of his career as a center, Schenn has been playing wing on the Blues' top line, recently alongside Robert Thomas, who the Isles were rumored to show interest in.
Now, joining an Islanders team in the thick of a playoff race, Schenn will be thrust into a top-6 role, while also playing a role on the power play and possibly the PK.
In a room full of leaders, including Captain Anders Lee, along with former Vancouver Canucks Captain Bo Horvat, Schenn's leadership will be a welcome addition to a close-knit locker room.
With two years remaining on his current contract and a $6.5M cap hit, Schenn will be with the Islanders past this season, as Darche was in search of a player with term. Though Schenn is likely a bit older than Darche was hoping for, he's still an upgrade to the current roster now and through the next two seasons.
