The NY Islanders and Mathieu Darche are positioning themselves for a playoff push as the clock winds down before the trade deadline on Friday at 3 pm. The Islanders are one of the teams expected to be active in the buyer's market, looking to improve their top-six forwards.
Currently maxed out on active players at 23, to make a trade work, the Islanders will need to ship out a player through trade or waivers. One of those players could be Anthony Duclair.
Duclair could be on the move
Signing a four-year deal with the Islanders in the summer of 2024, the agreement comes with a full no-trade clause through the first two seasons and a 16-team no-trade clause for the final two. Duclair has fallen out of favor with head coach Patrick Roy, finding himself in the press box rather than on the ice despite an impressive January. Now, NHL Insider for The Fourth Period, David Pagnotta, mentioned the Islanders have looked to shop Duclair earlier in the season and could move him before the deadline.
“They’ve been trying to move Anthony Duclair,” Pagnotta said on The Hot Stove on NHL Network Radio this morning. “He has a full no-trade this season. I believe they asked him earlier in this season to waive it - he declined. I don’t think they’ve really explored that since, or at least they haven’t gone to him since. But Anthony Duclair’s name has been out there this season… but don't be surprised if he ends up getting flipped at some point.”
On July 1, Duclair will lose his full trade protection, required to submit a 16-team trade list. If the Islanders are interested in moving him, he’d have more control over where he lands this season rather than next. But Duclair is definitely a player who could be on the move if Darche continues to add.
