The NY Islanders announced today that will be moving on from General Maanger and President Lou Lamoriello, as per the team website.

"The Islanders extend a heartfelt thank you to Lou Lamoriello for his extraordinary commitment over the past seven years," the Islanders said. "His dedication to the team is in line with his Hall of Fame career."

Lamoriello out as President and GM

It should be noted that Lamoriello was not fired from his position, but the organization has elected not to renew his contract. Operating partner John Collins will lead the search for the next General Manager.

The decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 2024-25 season that saw the Islanders accrue only 82 points in 82 games, missing the playoffs by nine points.

Taking over as president and GM in 2018, replacing Garth Snow, Lamoriello brought the team back to relevance after years of obscurity, leading the Isles back-to-back Conference/Semi-finals appearances in 2020 and 2021, for the first time since 1993. Lamoriello was recognized for the team's efforts during those seasons, named the recipient of the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.

The Isles had high expectations following those two seasons, but the roster remained much the same with little turnover. Much of the core was signed to long-term extensions, and many of those contracts aren't aging well.

Whoever Collins deems worthy of the position will become the seventh General Manager in team history. It's unclear whether Patrick Roy will remain Head Coach, but whether or not he is, Lamoriello's departure will be noticeable on the ice as players once again will be skating with facial hair.
