Amid their longest road trip of the season, the NY Islanders have amassed three points in three games. With two legs remaining on the trip before returning to Long Island, the Isles have an opportunity to turn this into a successful road trip that can fuel the team into the holiday season.
The Islanders took a point from the defending Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers with a two-goal comeback of their own and beat the Vancouver Canucks on what was the team's best game of the season. On Sunday, their 5-game point streak was snapped after a failed challenge on a controversial goaltender interference call that gave the Seattle Kraken a one-goal advantage with just over three minutes remaining.
Two games left to complete a successful road trip
The Isles finish off the road trip with games against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday and the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, with four massive points on the line. With a win in both matchups, it would give the Isles seven points on the trip, which would be a massive success, or, they could drop both, yielding only three points.
With a team reeling from injury, it can be argued that this road trip came at the perfect time. Typically, players like to start the season on the road, as it gives the team time to bond without the distractions of home. In this case, a team struggling to find its identity and chemistry may have found the right time to build that. Plus, the addition of a youngster Isaiah George, gives him a sense of what the NHL is all about and allows his teammates to get to know him.
The Islanders still have work to do and will likely need at least three points in the next two games to consider this trip a success.
