While much of the attention is deservedly on what the NY Islanders will do with the first overall pick, the franchise has a pick in each of the seven rounds, with days of research dedicated to each pick.
Having the 42nd pick in the draft, this selection is expected to become a big part of the organization going forward, especially with the Islanders having a weaker prospect pool.
Well, it appears that Mathieu Darche had the opportunity to meet with at least one player who could be available at No. 42, with that player being Cameron Schmidt, according to Sportsology on X.
The Isles meet with Cameron Schmidt
Schmidt is a 5’7” winger who can skate like the wind. Playing for the Vancouver Giants on the WHL this season, Schmidt finished the season with 78 points (40 G, 38 A) in 61 games.
Not only can Schmidt skate, he can also finish, having what is considered one of the draft’s better shots.
The biggest knock on Schmidt is, of course, his size. There aren’t too many players in the league at 5’7”, but the emergence of Alex DeBrincat and Cole Caufield in the last few seasons has likely made teams more inclined to take a chance on players of smaller stature.
While the teams making the selections take notice of his size, Schmidt tries not to think about it.
"I think I definitely use that kind of as motivation, just being the smaller guy," Schmidt said, according to Mike Morreale of NHL.com. "Try to play a more aggressive game, I guess, to fit just the way I play. And I think it brings a lot to my game."
"I hear [the size question] once in a while, but it's something I try to stay away from and not focus on that too much. I know what I'm able to do on the ice, and I know that my size isn't going to hurt my game in any way. I just try to focus on the positive things."
When Darche was introduced as the Islanders' GM, he said he wanted to see a fast-paced team. Perhaps his eye is on Schmidt in round two, as a player who can keep opponents on their toes while he’s on the ice.
