There's a strong possibility we see some movement from the NY Islanders on Friday night during the first night of the 2025 NHL Draft.
The perception is that Mathieu Darche will select Matthew Schaefer with his first pick as new GM, but he'll soon turn to rehaping his roster.
Of many options available, there is one Darche will likely do his due diligence on, which could help reshape the roster now and into the future.
Jordan Kyrou should be the NY Islanders top trade target
Jordan Kyrou's name has been floated about in the rumor mill as a player the St. Louis Blues might be interested in moving on from, as they believe Jimmy Snuggerud could slide into Kyrou's role in the top-6.
Kyrou, 27, is coming off a 70-point campaign, tallying 36 goals and 34 assists. He's been a consistent player throughout his career, averaging 71 points over the last three seasons, and has been in the lineup nearly every night, missing just three games during that span.
The former second-round pick in 2016 signed an eight-year deal with the Blues in 2023 with an AAV of $8.125M. Kyrou's no-trade clause is set to kick in on July 1, making this the Blues' best opportunity to move the forward to get the most in return.
Noah Dobson may be a player the Blues are interested in, as they are looking to add a puck-moving defenseman in order to fortify their blue line.
Kyrou would be a fantastic addition to the Islanders' top-six and would be the top-6 winger the organization has been in search of for so many years. Aside from Brock Nelson, whom the Islanders moved on from at the trade deadline, Matt Moulson is the last Islander to score 30 goals in three consecutive seasons, doing so between 2009-2011.
One of Kyrou's most pronounced abilities is his speed. The speedster won the NHL's fastest skater at the 2022 All-Star Game, ousting Connor McDavid, similar to Mat Barzal in 2020.
Kyrou could be the perfect linemate for Barzal, as he'd have no issue keeping up with Barzal's pace, and could be the finisher Barzy needs to go along with his playmaking propensity.
