HOW IT HAPPENED

The NY Islanders dropped two points tonight, shutout by the Dallas Stars 3-0. It would be wrong to say the Islanders played a poor game, as it was a tightly contested game throughout. There was little room to make plays but the Stars capitalized on their opportunities and got timely saves from Jake Oettinger, while the Isles failed to convert on any of theirs.

Tyler Seguin got things started for the Stars, opening the scoring in the first period. Jamie Benn doubled the lead midway through the second, with Seguin closing the doors on the Islanders with an empty net goal late in the third.,

WHAT WENT RIGHT

The Islanders didn't allow the Stars many grade-A opportunities, keeping the game tight through the neutral zone. Max Tsyplakov looked strong on the puck once again, with the entire second line looking like the Islanders' most threatening all night.

The Islanders were the dominant team in the third period, recording 15 shots and looking threatening for 20 minutes.

WHAT WENT WRONG

The puck didn't bounce the Islanders' way all night, and their few mistakes resulted in Stars' goals. The Islanders left Seguin wide open between the hash marks for his first of the night, while Jamie Benn scooped up a loose puck in tight after Tsyplakov and Kyle Palmieri overskated a puck, leaving in for the taking.

Jake Oettinger was a wall all night, looking locked in from the beginning of the game. After falling behind by two goals, it'd be hard to beat Otter once, let alone three times.

STATS OF THE GAME

Tsyplakov was fourth among all forwards in time on ice, playing 17:33, trailing only Mat Barzal, Bo Horvat, and Brock Nelson.

Oettenger turned away all 34 shots by the Islanders earning his first shutout of the season.
