HOW IT HAPPENED
It was another blown third-period lead for the NY Islanders but this time in a much more closely contested game against the Calgary Flames. The Islanders headed into the final stanza with a one-goal advantage but allowed a power play goal on their only taken penalty of the game. The Isles failed to convert a 4-on-3 man-advantage in overtime and didn't manage to score in the penalty shootout, falling by a score of 2-1
WHAT WENT RIGHT
Defensively the Islanders had another strong performance only allowing one goal. The Isles allowed just 15 shots through the first period, but Calgary put 14 on target in the third period, including Rasmus Andersson's power play goal. Semyon Varlamov had another great game between the pipes and Pierre Engvall continues one of his best runs in an Islanders uniform, scoring the team's lone goal where he toe-dragged into a shot, beating Dustin Wolf clean.
WHAT WENT WRONG
The Islanders were disciplined as they have been all season but paid for their only penalty of the game. After going 4-for-4 on the kill against the Seattle Kraken, they were 0-for-1 last night, which was the difference in the game. The Islanders had their opportunities to take an advantage in the third period, but Wolf was on his game from the get-go.
STATS OF THE GAME
Pierre Engvall has scored in three consecutive games for the second time in his Islanders career and looks like a different player since being recalled from Bridgeport. According to Stefan Rosner of The Hockey News, the Islanders have held 17 leads this season, blowing that lead 13 times, with an 0-2-3 record.
SOCIAL MEDIA MOMENT OF THE GAME
The Islanders came that close to winning in overtime off a Noah Dobson shot from the point that ricocheted off the crossbar. Wolf made sure to thank his post with a little kiss.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Islanders finish off their road trip tomorrow night in Detroit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
