It was a historic day at UBS Arena, as Alex Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading scorer, potting his 895th career goal.
What is typically a sea of orange and blue was a sea of red as Caps fans flocked to Long Island to witness The Great Eight solidify himself in the record books.
After Ovechkin's tally, the Caps' players flooded the ice to celebrate with their captain. The game stopped as Ovechkin's family, Gretzky, and Gary Bettman took the ice for a ceremony. During that time, the Isles also played a video montage of other athletes congratulating Ovi on his accomplishment.
Gretzky acknowledges the Isles
Though it was led by mostly Caps fans, Isles nation also participated in chants of "Ovi," as the Russian superstar has created so many memories for hockey fans regardless of which team they support.

Gretzky, who took the microphone to praise Ovechkin, made light of his history playing against the Islanders during his career, joking, "Itβs nice not to be at the Nassau Coliseum because I lost a lot of games there."
After the game, Gretzky, Bettman, and Director of the FBI, Kash Patel (a Garden City native), visited the Islanders' locker room to congratulate them on their sportsmanship.
"It's very classy for the come come over, Mr. Bettman and him (Gretzky), and see us and acknowledge how classy our players were," said Roy according to Stefan Rosner of The Hockey News. "Remember when Paul Maurice said he appreciated that we stayed on the bench for the 1000th game of their defenseman (Dmitry Kulikov). It's an important moment in our game. And I think it's important to be classy in this moment and support each other, even if we're not playing on the same team. I think it's important."
Ovechkin's record-setting 895th goal and Gretzky's 894th and final goal both came against the Isles. Ovi and the Isles will meet one more time this season as the Isles will hope to pr him from adding to his total.
