Just when everyone thought that the goaltending depth chart was finally set after Kevin Poulin was placed on waivers, GM Garth Snow pulled a fast one and claimed J-F Berube off waivers from Los Angeles. Now the depth chart looks something like this:

1. Jaro Halak

2. Thomas Greiss

3. J-F Berube

4. Stephon Williams

5. Chris Gibson

Let’s take a brief look at what he brings to the Islanders.

Name: Jean-Francois Berube

Position: Goalie

Age: 24

Nationality: Canada

Drafted: 95th overall in 2009 (Los Angeles Kings)

Similar Style of Play To: Nathan Lawson

Previous Teams: Los Angeles Kings

Best Season: Last season was his best season in the AHL. After slowly rising in the depth chart over the past few years in the Kings’ system, Berube backstopped the Manchester Monarchs to a Calder Cup victory. In the regular season, he had the lowest goals against average in the AHL for goalies who played over 50 games.

Interesting Fact: He has a pretty funny twitter account:

And he is friends with the NHL’s Twitter King, Paul Bissonette:

What He Brings to the Table: He is still only 24 years old and has shown steady improvements over the past couple of seasons in the minors. Some say he has the potential to turn into a good backup in the NHL one day. Although Greiss is signed to be on board for the next couple seasons with the Islanders, it will be interesting to see if Berube truly shows his potential. Despite his good size, scouts say Berube is fairly quick in the net and keeps a good position.

Where He Fits on the Team: Berube will be the team’s go-to call-up from the minors if either Halak or Greiss go down. It is speculated that Halak may miss some games at the start of the season, so he may be on the team’s roster to start the season. The Islanders were hoping for Kevin Poulin to clear waivers, but since he did, it was essential for them to jump on Berube.

Islanders fans are you happy with this waiver claim? For a waiver claim, Berube is very valuable. Los Angeles GM Dean Lombardi was criticized for not being able to trade Berube before letting him go, and Kings fans really liked this guy. Hopefully he can fulfill his potential on the Islanders.
