What will the New York Islanders lineup look like two years from now? The Hockey News tried to take a look and predict it.

I want to prefix this with saying it’s difficult to predict a lineup two months from now let alone two years, but I give The Hockey News credit for taking a stab at it. Here’s what they came up with as a potential lineup for the 2019-2020 season:

There’s a few things that jump out to me that I don’t really like. Jordan Eberle was brought here to be on John Tavares’ wing. I don’t see him being moved off the top line for Anders Lee and Kieffer Bellows. Eberle will slot in with Tavares this year and next year at least, it makes the most sense in order to capitalize on scoring.

I’m also not a big fan of Josh Ho-Sang on the third line. He’s your second best Right Wing behind Eberle so it only makes sense to put him on line two. The second best Right Wing playing on the second line is a pretty simple concept. I’m also still unsure of how I feel about Anthony Beauviller on the fourth line as well but where else are you putting him?

The defensive pairings are fine, I think that’ll work just fine. The one issue that jumps out with the goalies is Ilya Sorokin. There’s no way he is coming to the NHL by 2019. He just extended with his KHL team last month.

Lastly, and I know this is impossible to predict so I’m not hating on Hockey News for this, but if the Islanders don’t add any outsider by then either in free agency or via a trade that’s a bad sign. They have some prospect depth, make a deal.

The overall consensus is it’s just too far away to predict. I respect the idea, but I don’t think it works.
