Earlier this month, Chicago Blackhawks rookie Landon Slaggert scored his second career goal just seven seconds into a game against the Florida Panthers. It's hard to fathom a goal being scored any quicker, so it got us thinking, what is the fastest goal in NHL history and NY Islanders history?
Coincidentally enough, the fastest Islanders goal is also the fastest goal in league history.
On March 22, 1984, the Islanders traveled to take on the Boston Bruins in the famed Boston Garden. In a late-season matchup, only one point separated the two sides as the Isles sat with 95 points and the Bruins 94.
Gone in 5 seconds
Al Arbour sent out Bryan Trottier to take the opening face-off, and before most of the spectators found their seats, the Isles were up 1-0.
Trottier knocked a loose put past the Bruins defenseman, pushed the puck towards the top of the face-off circle, and unleashed a slap shot that beat goaltender Doug Keans just five seconds into the game.
At the time, Trottier was the third player to score a goal five seconds into a game, joining Merlyn Phillips of the Montreal Maroons (1926-27) and Doug Smail of the Winnipeg Jets (1981-82). Since then, Alexander Mogilny of the Buffalo Sabres (1991-92) matched the mark and has been the only player to do so since.
The record for the second-fastest goal in Islanders history belongs to Anthony Beauvillier, who scored nine seconds into the Isles matchup with the Detroit Red Wings on March 24, 2023.
