With only one goal needed to become the NHL's all-time goal scoring leader, Alex Ovechkin has the opportunity to pot goal No. 895 on Sunday afternoon against the NY Islanders.
Scoring twice last night in a 5-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin had the chance to surpass Wayne Gretzky with an empty net, but told Spencer Carberry he didn't want to break the record in that fashion and remained on the bench.
Gretzky has been in attendance as Ovi chases down his record, and with one more to go, The Great One will be at UBS Arena on Sunday.
Ovi and Gretz's success against the Isles
So with the two greatest goal scorers of all-time scheduled to be in the building, how have each fared in their careers against the Islanders?
Gretzky played in 55 games against the Islanders during his illustrious 20-year career. In those 55 games, he managed to score 35 goals while adding 63 assists. In his final season with the NY Rangers during the 1998-99 season, Gretzky scored goal No. 894 against the Isles in a 3-2 Rangers win. Gretzky didn't manage to add to his total in the final eight games of the season, meaning he scored his final goal against the Isles - a team he had so much history playing against.
Playing his entire career in the same division as the Islanders, Ovechkin has played 87 games against the division foes. During that time, he's scored 52 times against 11 different Islanders goalies. But there is one Islanders goalie he has yet to score against. In seven games against Ilya Sorokin, The Great Eight has failed to score against his fellow countryman and friend.
With Sorokin expected to be between the pipes on Sunday, Ovechkin has the opportunity to score his first against the Isles netminder, which would make him the 183rd goalie scored against by the greatest goal scorer of all-time.
