The New York Islanders blew a two-goal lead but managed to pull off a huge overtime win to salvage two points. That story highlights the Isles’ win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday night at the TD Garden.

It was a win that almost wasn’t. It was a well-played game for 40 minutes, and then, as has been the case all season long, the Isles blew a third-period lead. The Islanders had a 4-2 at 3:41 of the third after captain Anders Lee scored his second goal of the night.

All the Islanders had to do was clamp down and hold on for the win. Well, the Isles sent everyone on a wild ride as they allowed the Bruins to get back into the game. Less than a minute after Lee scored in the third, David Pastrnak came back with his first of the night to make it a one-goal game again.

Pastrnak struck again to tie the game midway through the third. Pstrnak’s 17th of the season tied the game, sending the game to overtime.

Now, I must admit It was somewhat of a strange overtime period. The Bruins took the initiative, looking to complete the comeback. But just when it looked like the Bruins had the upper hand, a long rebound came to Bo Horvat who beat Joonas Korpisalo on a nifty shot that trickled through for the game-winner.

As the Isles were celebrating on the ice, the TV broadcast turned to the bench and showed coach Patrick Roy let out a huge sigh of relief as he looked skyward on his way to the dressing room.

Heaven knows how long Roy had been holding his breath. But Roy’s expression said it all. It was a tough game that encapsulated the entire season so far. The Isles managed to get a huge win to snap a three-game skid.

Now, the plan will be to continue building on that momentum as the Isles take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday as part of a mini West Coast swing.

Husdon Fasching exits game during New York Islanders victory

New York Islanders bottom six forward Hudson Fasching left the game on Sunday night during the third period. There is no precise word regarding the injury.

It’s believed that Fasching sustained the injury after taking a big hit from Mark Kastelic earlier in the game. Fasching remained on the bench following the hit but left after attempting one shift. By the looks of the hit, it would appear to be an upper-body injury, perhaps a shoulder.

The Isles are already down Simon Holmstrom, who is listed as day-to-day. It remains to be seen if Fasching will go on IR, considering the Isles don’t play until Thursday. So, Fasching will have a chance to recover ahead of the Isles’ next game in Vegas.

Fasching is pointless in 19 games so far this season, registering a minus-6 rating.
