Third periods haven't been kind to the NY Islanders this season, but through the first 10 minutes of the final stanza of last night's matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks, it appeared as if the Islanders' fortunes were changing.

In a span of 2:19, the Isles scored three goals to give themselves a 5-1 advantage, chasing goaltender Arvid Soderblom in the process.

While it appeared the Isles would finally cruise to a comfortable victory, it became anything but that. TJ Brodie's first goal of the season with 8:56 remaining cut the lead to three, and two goals from Tyler Bertuzzi in the final 1:10 made it a 5-4 final score.

Roy shows frustration with his team

Patrick Roy, who has been tame in his press conferences compared to his time with the Colorado Avalanche, dug into his team on their play during the final minutes of the third period in front of Ilya Sorokin.

"I guess times have changed because in my days, I would break a stick in that room," Roy said. "I'd be very upset to see my team playing like that in front of me. Ilya is a gentleman - he is a first-class person. But that was unacceptable. We didn't compete, we didn't battle in front of the net the last eight minutes. That's unacceptable. We talked about it this morning to be stronger. Our goalie deserved more respect from ourselves."

Sorokin was phenomenal most of the night, allowing just one goal through the first 50 minutes which came off a beautiful goal by Connor Bedard. But as Roy said, their final eight minutes were unacceptable.

The third period woes have become way too frequent, with even one of the most respected names in the media noting he never feels an Islanders lead is safe.

"I don't know what's going on with the Islanders this year, " Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast. " In the third period right now, they could be winning 36-0 and if I bet, I'm not sure I bet on them. I don't know what's going on with them in third periods."

It's been an issue for more than a year, and it seems as if nobody within the organization knows how to fix it.
